Let's Do The Block

When I asked author Penny Zeller about her dreams to visit Australia, she shared the desire to shop in Melbourne, my home town. Not surprising, as Melbourne is Australia's best destination for speciality shops and retail therapy!

If Penny were to come, here's where I would take her. Melbourne's famous laneways and arcades. These quaint shopping alleys began life as rear access to impressive properties facing Melbourne's large streets in the late 1800s. Many were later roofed, and became arcades, offering shelter from the weather and crowds, and to provide more shop space. Today, they hum to the rhythm of daily city life.

Since 1869, Royal Arcade has acted as a hub between Bourke Street, Little Collins Street and Elizabeth Street. The famous Gaunt's Clock, flanked by two giant statues of Gog and Magog,  has chimed every hour since 1892.

The exquisite Block Arcade was named after the fashionable Collins Street block, where 19th century Melbournians liked to promenade, or do the block. Famous for its impressive etched glass roof with ornate wrought iron timber supports, it remains a hive of activity, with its mosaic floors and fascinating stores to explore.

Perhaps Penny will visit soon and we can take tea in one of Melbourne's famous tea rooms. In the meantime, LizR is my lucky book winner for the week. She will receive her own copy of Hailee, to enjoy a the taste of history and romance a world away from our arcades. Thanks to all who entered to win. I have another great book offer on Monday, so stay tuned.

Many thanks to Penny for being my guest this week. Blessings to you dear friend. And to all who stop by, I wish you a blessed Easter as we remember the work of our Saviour, and dearest friend.
